Meet the Team

Hunter Lohse, PLA, ASLA

Founder | Principal

Hunter is a South Texas native who returned to Brownsville in 2023 to found SABAL. A licensed landscape architect with a Master of Landscape Architecture from the University of Arizona, he brings a rare combination of ecological expertise, technical rigor, and deep familiarity with the landscapes of South Texas.

Before launching SABAL, Hunter's professional work spanned landscape architecture, park planning, green infrastructure, and university campus design — including park renovation projects in Tucson with Norris Design and community green infrastructure work with the Watershed Management Group. His broader background encompasses fifteen years across fashion, real estate, education, and community development, and two years of service as a Peace Corps Volunteer in the Philippines, where he worked in education and community outreach.

Hunter is an ISA Certified Arborist and ISA Certified Urban Forest Professional, and holds accreditations in the Sustainable Sites Initiative (SITES) and Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) in Neighborhood Development. He serves on the boards of CDCB and YouthBuild, is a member of Leadership Brownsville Class XXXIX, and is an active member of the Texas Master Naturalists Rio Grande Valley Chapter.

SABAL's plant philosophy is rooted in place: all plant material is selected from within a 200-mile range of the project site, with priority given to EPA Ecoregion Workhorse Plants — native species proven hardy, durable, and commercially available in South Texas. Irrigation is used to establish plantings and withdrawn thereafter, except in periods of extreme heat.
